Motorhome Hits Patrol Car; Deputy Recovering

A Multnomah County deputy is recovering after his patrol car was hit by a 40-foot motorhome Sunday night.

Authorities said the deputy stopped to help a stranded motorist with a flat tire on the side of Interstate 84 westbound near Multnomah Falls around 7 p.m.

Multnomah County authorities said the deputy had been there for more than 30 minutes with his emergency lights activated when the motor home clipped the driver’s side of the car.

“The officer was concerned about my safety, so he came out and tried to block the lane, and this motorhome couldn’t pull over quick enough. There was other traffic coming, so he sideswiped the police car,” said Robert Murakami, the stranded motorist.

Authorities said the deputy was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There is no further information on his condition this time.

The deputy’s name has not been released.

The sheriff’s office has asked the Gresham and Troutdale police departments to handle the crash investigation.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Parking war breaks out in seaside town

A PARKING war has broken out between the owners of giant, new-style motorhomes and car users heading to their local shops or workplace.

Owners of the huge American motorhomes - bigger than old-fashioned camper vans - are battling against local opinion for the right to park their vehicles in the car parks and streets of Welsh towns.

Motorhomes, which pack all mod-cons into one self-propelled vehicle, are increasingly popular alternatives to caravans in the UK.

But their affluent owners claim they are being shut out of many car parks by maximum height barriers.

They have warned that councils failing to provide marked spaces for motorhomes - or demanding double the car-parking charge for occupying two spaces - will deprive the local economy of income.
